Things To Watch Out Before Outdoor Camping
February 23, 2024

One of the best things about camping is that it gets you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But, it’s important to be prepared before heading out into the great outdoors. Here are a few things to keep in mind before your next camping trip!

Location

There are a few things to consider when choosing a location for your outdoor camping trip. First, you’ll need to find a safe spot that is not too close to any potential hazards like cliffs or bodies of water. Second, you’ll want to make sure there is enough space for your campsite and all of your gear. Third, you’ll need to find a location with good weather conditions for the time of year you plan on camping. And finally, you’ll want to choose a spot that has scenic views and interesting things to do in the area.

Campfire Safety

Before starting a campfire, always check with the local ranger station to see if open fires are permitted. If they are, clear an area around the fire pit down to bare dirt. Then, build a ring out of rocks to contain your fire. If you can’t find rocks, dig a pit and line it with sand.

Start your fire with tinder – small, dry twigs or paper. Once the tinder is burning, add larger pieces of wood until you have a good bed of coals. Never leave your fire unattended – make sure it’s completely out before you go to sleep or leave the area.

Wildlife

One of the most important things to consider before going on an outdoor camping trip is the wildlife in the area. Campers should be aware of the local animals and how to avoid them. Here are some tips:

-Make sure you know what kind of animals are in the area and what their habits are.
-Be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially if you’re hiking or walking in areas where there may be wildlife.
-If you see an animal, do not approach it and give it space.
-Make sure your campsite is clean and free of food waste, as this can attract animals.
-Keep your food stored properly so that animals can’t get to it.

First Aid

Whether you’re planning a backpacking trip or a day hike, it’s always important to be prepared for the worst. That means having a first-aid kit on hand in case of any accidents or injuries. Here are some things to consider when packing your first-aid kit:

Bandages: Include a variety of bandages in different sizes for cuts, scrapes and blisters.

Antiseptic: Bring along antiseptic wipes or spray to clean wounds.

Pain relief: Pack pain relievers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen for headaches, muscle aches and pain from minor injuries.

Allergy medication: If you have any allergies, be sure to bring along appropriate medication, such as an EpiPen for severe reactions.

Tweezers: Tweezers can be useful for removing splinters and ticks.

Scissors: A small pair of scissors can come in handy for cutting bandages and tape.

Flashlight: A flashlight is essential for hikes after dusk or in case of an emergency at night.
